Artist Statement

I believe in painting what I know and love and there is nothing more satisfying to me than creating the memory of my time in the mountains. I am always looking for that special shape of a tree, or the undergrowth or it could even be a color or design that attracts me. I can visualize the painting and with the aid of photos I can bring that image back to my studio and use it as a starting point for a new painting. Its an emotional thing that you feel about your subject not a determination to get everything present in the photo into the painting. I enjoy playing with color and values and allow myself to just go by instinct when selecting the palette for any given painting. My work is very wet when I begin applying a variety of color. I must paint flat so that the color remains on the canvas. I experimented for many years on how to add texture to my canvas and have developed a recognizable style. I hunt for shapes as the paint begins to dry and then break many rules of painting to reach my final stroke.
